A sod-turning ceremony is taking place in Regina this afternoon to officially mark the construction of a First Nations Veterans’ Memorial Tipi.

The glass tipi will be built in the centre of the First Nations University of Canada’s Regina campus.

The project is expected to cost $2.4 million.

The Saskatchewan Indian Gaming Authority has already committed half that total.

The FNUC says it is hoping to secure the rest of the amount needed through fundraising. However, in case those efforts fail, the university says it has already made financing arrangements with its banking institution.

The monument is scheduled to be completed in time for Remembrance Day.
