English professor Jo-Ann Episkenew, from the First Nations University of Canada, has launched a new book.

Episkenew’s book, “Taking Back Our Spirits”, was released yesterday in Regina.

It explores the link between Aboriginal literature and public policy.

“When they look at what is going on in Aboriginal communities today, I want them to be able to go back through histories and the policies of the duly elected governments of Canada and go, ‘Oh, that’s how that happened,’” Episkenew says.

Episkenew says writing the book has been a long journey. but she hopes the book will be a valuable teaching tool.

“We’d have to understand how things came to be but we also need the power to change them,” she says.
