A newly-named academic at the First Nations University of Canada says Indigenous schools are beginning to question who gives them authority and how it’s determined.
Dr. Shauneen Pete is the new Vice-President of Academics at the FNUC.
She also authored a report that supported the school’s autonomy over itself after an outcry over staff changes at the university broke out a couple of years ago.
Since that time, the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada has conducted an examination into allegations of political interference and restrictions of academic freedom at the institution.
The AUCC’s findings will be released to the public in April. Depending on what it has uncovered, it may decide to revoke the FNUC’s membership in the association.
Pete says many Indigenous schools have evolved to the point where accreditation to mainstream groups may no longer be necessary.
Her report last year concluded that the FNUC didn’t need membership in the AUCC to survive.
