An official with the Flying Dust First Nation says the band may institute new user fees as a result of a recent fire started by young children.

On March 7th, fire broke out at a duplex on the reserve, leaving four families homeless.

Flying Dust housing coordinator Albert Derocher says the band has put the families up in a hotel.

It’s still not known if the housing complex they lived in can be repaired, or if it will have to be replaced.

None of the families had insurance on their possessions.

Derocher says the band may raise its user fees for homeowners in the future to safeguard everyone.

Right now, the onus is on the residents to fund their own insurance.
