Fishers Ready To Tackle Weighty Issues

The annual conference of northern Saskatchewan’s commercial fishers is getting into full swing today in Prince Albert.

There is expected to be plenty of discussion about a long-awaited fish processing facility in Prince Albert.

Construction of the proposed plant has been on hold because of a disagreement between the fishers and the Freshwater Fish Marketing Corporation over which fish, and how much of it, the FFMC is willing to market.

Fishers are also expected to hear an update from the provincial government about an inter-departmental review of the fishing industry.

One of the issues the province has been researching is whether it is advisable for fishers to try to come out of the FFMC’s umbrella and market their fish themselves.

The conference continues tomorrow.
