The National Coordinator of the organization representing all First Nations Cultural Centres across Canada says the Federal Government needs to do more to protect First Nations languages.

Claudette Commanda-Cote was speaking at the First Nations Language Keepers Conference in Saskatoon today.

She says the French language is protected under Law and First Nations languages should be treated similarly.

Commanda-Cote says even the United States has legislation to protect Native American languages.

Commanda-Cote says her organization will continue to lobby the Government for more language protection as she says it is First Nations peoples’ constitutional and treaty right.

She says her ultimate goal is to have First Nations languages be the first language of all First Nations people.
