First Nations Encouraged To Delve Into Agriculture

At least one band councillor says the idea of First Nations directly getting into the farming business should be considered.

The issue was floated at yesterday’s Chief to Chief Natural Resource Symposium in Saskatoon.

Carl Kennedy is from the Little Pine First Nation and says most of his community’s land is leased out to farmers.

He says this wasn’t the vision of the chiefs who signed treaties — but rather, that First Nations would become self-sufficient.

Kennedy says when a band leases land to farmers, it doesn’t know what the farmer is doing — nor does it have any control over what is taking place.
