Oatmeal bannock, taco soup and spicy hummus: these were some items on the menu at last night’s food preparation session for members of the Standing Buffalo and Peepeekisis First Nations.

The demonstration is a part of a 12-week School of Wellness community health challenge.

Ten-member teams from each First Nation meet with health educators, dietitians and fitness trainers once a week, to learn about healthy living and getting in shape.

Angie Favel, a member of the Peepeekisis team, says participating in the challenge is making her more conscious of the food she eats.

“It’s made me more aware of how I’m eating at home, what I’m feeding to my kids, ways that I can improve on what I’m feeding to them, and (it’s) just made me want to do more in the way of exercising and taking into consideration my health a lot more,” Favel says.

The challenge continues until the first week of December.

The team that loses the most combined inches will take home a $5,000 prize.

This money will go towards a wellness initiative in the community.
