First Nations Awards Presented At Dakota Dunes

A woman from the Kawacatoose First Nation was recognized for her life’s work at last night’s annual First Nations Awards on the Whitecap Dakota First Nation.
Beatrice Assoon was presented with this year’s lifetime achievement award.
A fellow Kawacatoose band member, Allan Asapace, was the winner of the education award.
A total of 13 individuals and agencies were honoured in last night’s ceremony.
Northern winners included Emile Highway of the Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation, who was honoured in the veterans category; the Lac La Ronge Indian Band’s Sarah Gauthier, who was presented with the science and technology award; and Red Earth’s Tyrone Ross, who won the journalism award.
Sakimay’s Lisa Workman was given the award for community work and involvement, Lorna Standingready of the Peepeekisis First Nation won the business award, Gloria Rainey of the Big River First Nation was honoured in the justice category, and Pelican Lake’s Nora F. Thomas won the social work award, while the Wahpiimoostoosis Healing Centre on the Star Blanket First Nation took home the award for medicine and health.
Other winners included Reba O’Watch of the Okanese First Nation, who was the youth award winner; Beardy’s band member Kevin Arcand, who was presented with the arts and entertainment award; and Cadmus Delorme, who took home top honours in the sports and recreation category.
The awards are in their 15th year, and are organized annually by the Regina-based organization Women of the Dawn.
