First Nations people in Nipawin now have an advocate at their side when faced with everyday problems in the town.

Late last month, a handful of Aboriginal residents created the Nipawin First Nations Association — a support group designed to assist band members who need help dealing with government agencies, school systems and other official bodies.

The advisor to the group, Gordon Denton, says he wishes to make it clear to the public that this will not be another governing committee.

Denton estimates that approximately nine percent of Nipawin’s 5-thousand residents are of First Nations’ ancestry.

He says the group has already appointed an executive and plans to hold its first official meeting later this month.
