The home of a Lac La Ronge Indian Band elder living on-reserve has been chosen to be the first recipient of natural gas in the La Ronge area.

The tap is being turned on today, ushering in a new choice of fuel for many local residents.

SaskEnergy spokesman Dave Burdeniuk says the company hoping to get a large number of northern customers hooked up before winter.

“We’ve got customers ready to go on the Lac La Ronge band (reserves), in Air Ronge, and our first three business customers in the town of La Ronge, but the first customer in the area will actually be right on the Lac La Ronge reserve,” Burdeniuk says.

He says over 200 customers in both La Ronge and Air Ronge have signed up for the service.

Residential customers in La Ronge will not be getting natural gas this winter, as SaskEnergy had trouble crossing the Montreal River, delaying completion of the project.
