A former band councillor in Grandmother’s Bay says residents are happy to be home after being evacuated because of a nearby forest fire.

At one point, the Granny fire was only a couple of kilometers away from the reserve.

Leon Charles says the area is changed because of the fire, and one trapper lost a cabin.

Charles says although almost the entire communtiy was evacuated, residents are just happy to finally be home and that their possessions and property were protected by those who remained behind.

He says, to date, the community has not experienced any problems with break-ins or thefts following the evacuations.
