Three youths are facing charges following a fire over the weekend that destroyed the elementary school in Deschambault Lake.

The local RCMP say they got the call about a fire at the school early Sunday afternoon.

When they got there, smoke was billowing from the roof and flames were coming from the rear of the building.

The building was eventually totally destroyed by the fire, but no one was injured.

A 14-year-old boy, a 12-year-old boy and a 12-year-old girl have been charged with break and enter and committing arson.

They’ve been released from custody and will appear in a Deschambault Lake courtroom on April 6th.

Elementary-aged schoolchildren have been taking classes at the local high school for about a month now, as local officials had been trying to determine the extent of a rodent infestation.

Band spokesman Peter A. Beatty says the fire has accelerated the push for a new elementary school.

Beatty hopes Indian Affairs will be able to approve plans and supply funds for a proposed $6.2-million facility.
