The federal Fisheries minister has asked an Ontario firm to look into the potential of dual marketing in the western Canadian commercial fishery.

Right now, commercial fishers have no choice but to market their fish through the Freshwater Fish Marketing Corporation.

The FFMC says the study will explore which option will maximize benefits to commercial fishers.

President and CEO John Wood says the action is being taken in response to a group of fishers who lobbied the government for a review of the corporation’s marketing operations.

Freshwater has been the sole marketer of inland fish for interprovincial and export trade since 1969.
