The federal government has announced it’s beginning a study into the Wollaston Lake all-weather road project.

Lucille Jamault of the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency says Environment Minister John Baird has ordered an environmental assessment to be done soon.

Jamault explains the decision was based on recommendations by two other federal agencies. She says Indian Affairs and Western Economic Diversification will prepare a report that will be made public. Baird will make a final decision after the public has had a chance to comment on the document.

According to the provincial government, the road link will give Wollaston residents access to the rest of Saskatchewan through a series of culverts and roadways to Highway 905.

The project is expected to cost $16 million.
