The president of the Metis National Council says he is optimistic Ottawa will renew a long-standing employment and training deal.

Yesterday, Clem Chartier met with leaders from the First Nations and Inuit communities to affirm support for continued funding to the Aboriginal labour force.

Chartier says the five-year deal that supplies funding to projects like the Metis Aboriginal Human Resource Development Agreement is up in less than a year.

He and the other leaders are hoping to get commitments from the federal government that would see the deal renewed.

Saskatchewan’s Metis development agreement used to be administered by METSI, but now it is handled by the Gabriel Dumont Institute.
