The president of the Native Women’s Association of Canada is calling on the federal government to fund more First Nations police forces on reserves.

Beverly Jacobs attended the National Aboriginal Policing forum held last week in Ottawa.

Jacobs says she was appalled to hear so many First Nations leaders say their forces are starving for funding.

She adds the lack of assistance from Ottawa is glaring when one sees the numbers.

Jacobs believes the lack of funding speaks volumes to her about Ottawa’s attitude towards safety on reserves, particularly as it relates to Aboriginal women.

Jacobs also is not happy that the Department of Public Safety has pulled out of the NWAC’s Sisters in Spirit campaign.
