Charges of sexual assault have been laid against the father of an Aboriginal girl who was allegedly gang-raped by three men near Tisdale in 2001.
During a trial of one of the girl’s alleged attackers, court heard that DNA found on her underwear belonged to her father.
RCMP spokesman Sgt. Brad Kaeding says the charges against her dad date back to the early 1990s, and allegedly involve young girls — but not the daughter of the accused.
Kaeding says her father was initially facing 10 counts of sexual assault, but that’s since been dropped to five charges.
Kaeding admits the testimony heard in court helped steer the investigation into her father’s alleged activities, but says the Mounties got tips from other sources, as well.
The girl’s dad was was committed to stand trial following a preliminary hearing last week. He will have his case heard in September.
His daughter, who’s now 17, testified last week at the trial of Jeffrey Kindrat. Kindrat was acquitted of the charge against him earlier this week. He was also acquitted in an earlier trial a few years ago, before the Crown appealed and a new trial was ordered.
A co-accused, Dean Edmonson, was found guilty of sexual assault in his trial — but didn’t receive a jail sentence.
A third co-accused, Jeffrey Brown, will have his second trial on the matter heard later this year.
