A man has been killed in a helicopter crash south of Fond Du Lac.

The RCMP say the unidentified victim was one of three occupants of a small, single-engine, 4-seat Heli-Max Hughes chopper that crashed yesterday in some water near Davy Lake.

The deceased is believed to have escaped from the helicopter after the crash, but didn’t make it to shore.

An RCMP underwater recovery team has been sent to the area to assist in the search for the victim’s body.

The chopper, which was working for a Smithers, BC company conducting geological surveys east of Davy Lake, crashed about 10 metres from shore at a depth of 2.5 to 3 metres of water.

The pilot was not seriously injured, and was treated for his injuries at a Buffalo Narrows medical facility. Another passenger was transported to a hospital in Saskatoon for further treatment.

The cause of the crash is not known, but Transport Canada is investigating.

It’s also not clear when exactly the crash took place. The accident was reported to the RCMP at 2:45 yesterday afternoon, but only after the survivors walked back to their camp 8.5 kilometres away.
