The sister of a missing woman from the Onion Lake First Nation says the holidays were an extremely tough time for the family.

Ruby Whitstone says it was about six weeks ago that the remains of her sister, Violet Marie Heathen, were discovered in Alberta.

Heathen, 49, had been missing since May 15, 2009, prompting family members to search for her in and around Lloydminster, where she was last seen at a local hotel.

Whitstone says that just before Christmas, the RCMP confirmed to the family that the found remains were Heathen’s.

Whitstone says she feels some relief that her sister has been found, but it is still tough for the family to accept.

Meantime, RCMP in Alberta are confirming that human remains were discovered in Kitscotty, Alberta, a community located on the Yellowhead Highway.

However, officials won’t confirm or deny the identity of those remains, merely saying an investigation is underway.
