A three-day conference on Aboriginal people and the justice system begins today in Saskatoon.

The event is expected to attract a wide range of legal experts and community leaders from across the Prairies.

Paul Chartrand, a law professor from the University of Saskatchewan, says the gathering will specifically focus on how the recent Neil Stonechild inquiry and the Commission on First Nations and Metis Peoples and Justice Reform are affecting Aboriginal people.

Chartrand says Saskatchewan is constantly being dragged into the media spotlight for less than desirable reasons.

However, he feels our province’s racial problems could be the catalyst for change across the country.

He adds panel discussions will also take place about how recommendations from the justice reform commission and the Stonechild inquiry might possibly be implemented.

The conference wraps up on Friday.
