Environment Officials Clarify Eagle Parts Policy

A manager with the Specialized Enforcement Unit of Saskatchewan Environment says eagle feathers will only be seized from northern residents if his department believes they were obtained unlawfully.

The topic recently rose to the surface after a Waterhen Lake band member complained he was unfairly suspected of trafficking eagle parts.

Department spokesman Bill Zimmer explains that while eagles are protected species, there is nothing wrong with picking up loose feathers that have been shed.

However, anyone wanting to hang onto the body of a dead eagle — or take feathers from one that has been killed unnaturally — must obtain a permit.

Zimmer wouldn’t comment on whether or not he believes illegal trafficking of eagle parts is a serious problem in the province.

However, another official reports the matter is not believed to be as serious as the problem in British Columbia.
