Enrolment Down At FNUC

A vice-chief with the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations is responding to statistics that show enrolment is down considerably at the First Nations University of Canada.

According to the provincial government, fall student enrolment at the FNUC declined from roughly 2,500 students in 2004 to around 850 in 2007.

Vice-Chief Lyle Whitefish says he believes the problem is tied to soaring rental costs in the cities and the lure of trade schools.

Whitefish says he doubts the decline is due to the tumultuous events of 2005, when several teachers resigned or were fired.

He adds enrolment is down at other universities in Saskatchewan, as well.
