A First Nations leader was in Regina last night for a tent meeting.

Elijah Harper was invited by a local non-profit group to speak to members of the community.

Harper says the prime minister’s residential school apology was an important first step toward healing.

“I think it was important for the prime minister, the leader of the country, to acknowledge the wrongs or the sins that have been committed against our people, and it’s very important that the prime minister apologize,” Harper says.

Harper says it’s now time for First Nations people to accept the government’s apology and start to forgive.

Harper was instrumental in blocking the Meech Lake Accord in 1990.
