Elders Event Not A Big Draw For Non-Native Leaders

Battlefords Agency Tribal Chiefs Chair Sheldon Wuttunee says this week’s elders gathering in Battleford on treaty implementation was a success.
But Wuttunee is disappointed with the lack of non-Native representation at the event.
He says it was more important for non-Aboriginal leaders to be at an event like this — because he says the Battlefords area was built on enterprise that wouldn’t haven’t been possible without the signing of treaties.
A few non-Aboriginal people did show up — including Battleford Mayor Chris Odishaw who extended greetings to those assembled on Wednesday.
Treaty Commissioner Bill McKnight also attended the gathering, and Wuttunee made a point of thanking him for doing so.
The event began Tuesday and ended Thursday.
