Elder Calls on Communities to Support Inmates

An elder at the Prince Albert Correctional Centre says Dene inmates at the facility could use more support.

Terence Montgrand has worked at the centre for approximately eighteen months providing emotional and spiritual counselling.

Recently an inmate of Dene ancestry there took his own life.

The family of the deceased questioned whether there was enough support given to inmates from the far north and other Dene communities.

Montgrand says he believes the correctional centre is doing the best it can.

However he would like to see communities who have members inside the jail, reach out to them a little more.

Montgrand adds he is always willing to assist community members in meeting with inmates. He says all they have to do is contact him.
