A search is underway for an elderly La Loche man who went through the ice on a snowmobile on a northern lake overnight.

The unidentified 65-year-old man is one of two individuals who went into the water near a lodge on Lloyd Lake.

The other rider, a 46-year-old man also from La Loche, was able to climb to safety.

However, he had to walk quite a distance before he was finally picked up at around 3:30 this morning.

He was taken to hospital, suffering from hypothermia.

RCMP spokesperson Sgt. Carole Raymond says an underwater recovery team has been summoned because it doesn’t appear the older man made it out of the water.

Lloyd Lake is about 110 kilometres north of La Loche.
