Displaced Chief Awarded Brief Term in Office

The Pelican Lake First Nation is once again under the leadership of Peter Bill.

Bill had been chief for the past couple of years before he was forced to step aside last month after a band election saw challenger Francis Thomas launched into power.

However, a recent Federal Court ruling has overturned that decision – at least for now.

Indian Affairs spokesman James Parker says the situation will be sorted out by the courts, but admits it may take time.

Parker says Bill’s two-week extension as chief runs out this weekend.

After that, no one will be recognized as chief until Indian Affairs hears more from the Federal Court.
