First Nations in Saskatchewan and Manitoba will go under the microscopre over the next two years.

A researcher from the University of Regina is examining diabetes levels among on-reserve residents.

Professor Paul Hackett says he hopes to learn more about why so many aboriginal people contract the disease.

He says part of his study will try to determine how the introduction of reserves forced First Nations people to adopt less-healthy lifestyles.

Hackett says traditional research implies that genetics are the main reason why aboriginal people contract the disease, but he feels this may possibly be a red herring.
