Dene Elders Gearing Up for Week of Talks

A small clearing of land between Black Lake and Points North Landing will be the scene of a major gathering this week for Dene elders.
From now until Friday, elders will discuss a number of topics facing the Far North — including land use, residential schools, children’s issues and the need to build healthy relationships.
Coordinator June McDonald of the Prince Albert Grand Council says one of the main goals of the event is to figure out ways of curbing substance abuse before it happens.
McDonald says another concern is that not enough children in the Athabasca region know what it is like to live off the land in a traditional manner.
She says many other issues will be discussed, including recent developments with the North of 60 land dispute.
