Decision On Boarding School Postponed To March

A Metis leader in Ile-a-la-Crosse says it will be another month and a half before boarding school survivors there learn whether they will be included in the residential school compensation deal.

Don Favel says the federal government has told him and others it will not make a decision over the issue until March 19th — two months later than expected.

As a result, Favel plans to hold a meeting next week to update the survivors about the latest efforts to get the Ile-a-la-Crosse institution included on the list of ones eligible for compensation.

He notes interest in the matter is high, and even some northwest Saskatchewan First Nations have become involved.

Meanwhile, he says it’s his understanding that some Metis students from a similar school in Beauval have actually received cheques.

He’s hopeful that development will be precedent-setting.

The upcoming meeting will take place at the Ile-a-la-Crosse recreational centre on February 16th.
