The death of an Ontario man at the hands of wolves near Points North Landing is prompting the province to take another look at northern landfills.
The government is giving a grant of $50,000 to New North — the Saskatchewan Association of Northern Communities — to study the feasibility of regional waste management in northern Saskatchewan.
The coroner’s jury that looked into the November 2005 death of Kenton Carnegie recommended that the province improve the regulation of landfills in northern Saskatchewan.
Saskatchewan Environment Minister Nancy Heppner says there are unique challenges involved with waste management in the North — but adds it’s important that safety around northern landfills is ensured.
The study will assess the options for northern communities to work together in managing waste and sharing resources.
