Premier Brad Wall has dropped the writ on a long-anticipated provincial by-election in northern Saskatchewan.

Wall says the by-election in the vacant Cumberland constituency will take place on June 25th.

The riding has been without an MLA since Joan Beatty resigned from the post in early January to run for the Liberals in a federal by-election — a vote she ended up losing to the Conservatives’ Rob Clarke.

Wall says this by-election campaign will give the government a chance to talk about “some of the important initiatives it has taken in the first six months in office, as well as the role of the north in a growing and vibrant Saskatchewan economy”.

The Saskatchewan Party will be represented by Dale McAuley, while Doyle Vermette will run for the NDP.

The riding has been dominated by the NDP for the better part of four decades.

It will be the third time in the last eight months that residents in the riding have gone to the polls — counting the federal by-election in March and last November’s provincial election.
