A lawsuit that pits the village council in La Loche against one of the community’s residents is set to go to trial.

Daniel “Skip” Montgrand is suing the council over damage to one of his truck’s tires he alleges was caused by an exposed culvert in one of the community’s roads.

Montgrand says he had no way of knowing where the culvert was when he drove over it this past January, because it was covered in snow and not properly marked.

Montgrand was initially seeking $250 in compensation, but now wants the council to come up with $670 to cover other costs related to the incident and the ensuing legal battle.

He is also angry the village has decided to hire a lawyer rather than pay him.

La Loche mayor Georgina Jolibois says the village is fighting the suit as a matter of principle, because council members don’t believe it’s a legitimate claim.

A trial on the matter will take place in November.
