Crime Reduction Strategy Unveiled In La Ronge

The provincial government officially announced the introduction of the La Ronge Crime Reduction Strategy on Friday.

Justice Minister Frank Quennell says it was developed as a response to the growing number of concerned residents worried about high rates of property and violent crime.

Quennell says this home-grown initiative is a direct result of dedicated work by several concerned community leaders, residents, organizations and the RCMP.

He says now that all of the partners have developed the plan together, they must continue working together to make sure the plan works.

Quennell insists this type of strategy has been very effective in other places where the community kept its focus on what it was trying to accomplish. He says itis very important that none of the partners ease up on their commitment — noting that previous experience has shown that crime will return to its previous level fairly quickly if even one of the partners drops out.

The provincial funding for this strategy will be used to hire a new RCMP officer to work full-time on this file. There will also be a designated prosecutor working part-time on the strategy.
