Some crime statistics have been released for the northern part of the province.

They show that the overall rate of crime is down in the communities of La Loche and La Ronge.

Violent crimes are down by six per cent in La Loche, while non-violent crimes are down by seven per cent.

In La Ronge, non-violent crimes have dropped by five per cent.

However, the number of violent crimes has risen by seven per cent.

The numbers are taken from 2008 and compared to the year before.

The mayor of La Ronge, Joe Hordyski, says he’s happy to hear the non-violent crime rate is going down.

Hordyski says the five per cent drop is significant, as the number of non-violent incidents is very high.

As for the seven per cent rise in violent incidents, Hordyski says that statistic can be misleading, as the number of violent incidents is much lower than non-violent ones.

He says that means it only takes a few more crimes for the overall rate to jump.

This year, the province also expanded the list of offences considered violent crimes to include uttering threats, criminal harassment and forcible confinement.
