A First Nation near Regina is trying to address housing issues.
Cowessess First Nation is seeking provincial support for off-reserve housing developments.
Alvin Delorme, Manager of Cowessess Urban Services, says they want band members to own homes in the city.
“For those people who aren’t capable of getting a home, though, we need to start finding affordable housing solutions for them. Because the provincial government had a lot of money in the last while for off-reserve housing, but they were pushing the home ownership projects.
“When you look at the population in North Central, 40 per cent of them are under 18, and the median income is $30,000 (per year) for a family. And how does a family with a median income level of $30,000 qualify them for a mortgage that will get them into a home?,” Delorme says.
The project is expected to cost $4-million.
