A correctional centre for women near Prince Albert now has 22 more beds for its inmates.

Today, the Provincial Government officially opened a new unit at Pinegrove Correctional Centre.

Facility Director, Heather Scriver says the new wing will accommodate women who are on good behavior and working towards rehabilitation.

She says the new unit also alleviates overcrowding as 127 women are in a facility designed for 85.

Meanwhile, an Aboriginal liaison with Pinegrove says the opening of the new wing is a positive step.

Joyce Letendre says cultural teachings are a vital step to getting offenders back into society.

She adds many offenders who use the cultural components are successful in their rehabilitation.
