The newly elected president of the Native Women’s Association of Canada will be honoured today for her work in fighting for Aboriginal women’s rights.

Jeannette Corbiere Lavell will receive the Governor General’s Award in Commemoration of the Persons Case, an award presented annually to honour those who have made outstanding contributions to the advancement of women’s equality and have celebrated Canada’s evolution as an inclusive society.

Corbiere Lavell fought for Aboriginal women’s rights for decades, including headlining a landmark court challenge to regain her First Nations status.
