Conference Tackles Fitness Levels In The North

A push by northern leaders to make their citizens more active is behind a two-day conference in Prince Albert.

Yesterday, officials with the Saskatchewan In Motion team began a workshop for 55 northern representatives on ways of increasing their community’s fitness levels.

Saskatchewan In Motion programmer Don Racette says simply getting someone moving lowers their risk of heart disease and diabetes.

He knows many challenges exist for residents of remote or isolated locations, and at least part of the conference is focusing on ways around that.

Racette says First Nations, in particular, often run into funding difficulties because provincial dollars for fitness and recreation cannot be spent on a reserve.
