Commercial Fishers Not Exempt From Review

Saskatchewan’s Environment minister says the province won’t just be reviewing the sport fishery over the next couple of years, but also the commercial fishery.

David Forbes is in the middle of a 5-day tour of northern Saskatchewan.

He has visited the communities of Stony Rapids, Deschambault Lake and La Ronge and has had the chance to meet with groups representing both outfitters and commercial fishers.

It was reported earlier this week that the province would be reviewing the impact of sport fishers on Saskatchewan’s lakes and rivers for the first time in 10 years.

But Forbes says it was clear during his meetings with commercial fishers and outfitters this week that the province needs to look at the entire picture and find ways to sustainably accomodate the needs of both groups.

Forbes will spend the next few days in La Loche, Meadow Lake and Cumberland House.
