An Aboriginal comic book aimed at diabetes prevention has hit store shelves.

The characters are Aboriginal, the artist — Steven Sanderson — is from the James Smith Cree Nation, and the book was sanctioned by the Healthy Aboriginal Network.

Network executive director Sean Muir says it was important to show something that isn’t usually seen in mainstream media: a strong Aboriginal youth.

Muir adds that it was also important to release a book that wasn’t too “cheesy”, but would attract attention for its strong artwork and storytelling.

“An Invited Threat” is the follow up to “Darkness Falls”, a suicide prevention comic that has sold over 40,000 copies to date.
