COGEMA Resources has become the first uranium mining company in Canada to achieve the highest internationally-recognized environmental standard for its exploration activities.

The AREVA subsidiary has received the ISO 14001 environmental management certification.

Spokesman Alun Richards says the company wants to make it clear to northern residents that it’s doing everything possible to limit the impact on the environment.

Richards also says this new standard of care even applies to contract drilling crews hired by COGEMA.

A few years ago, COGEMA’s McClean Lake mine became the first uranium mine in North America to get this type of certification.

Richards says the company plans to get a similar type of certification for its decommissioning work at Cluff Lake, which is scheduled to start later this year.
