Close Call For Road Worker In Far North

The operator of a swamp buggy is said to be doing fine after falling through the ice in his machine early last night near Wollaston Lake.

The man was one of several people helping to plow snow for a winter road that locals have had a hard time constructing this winter because of unusually warm weather.

Local contractor Ed Benoanie was supervising the work site, and admits that the shortage of fuel and food in Athabasca communities has made their work more urgent.

Benoanie says if the situation doesn’t improve, and the government doesn’t provide some sort of assistance, his crews will begin constructing a winter road in areas that haven’t been approved by the province.
