Cigar Lake Site Cleanup Slowly Progressing

An official with Cameco says the company intends to drill more holes at the Cigar Lake uranium operation to help deal with the recent flood.

Lyle Krahn confirms his group has applied to the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission for permission to drill four large-diameter holes.

Krahn says 250 workers at the site have already drilled 11 of 14 drainage holes so far — but the new ones would help the process considerably. He notes the proposal would see the holes left in place when the mine becomes operational, just in case they’re needed again.

He says the public will be updated on the full situation at the end of the month.
