Churchill River Riding Gets New Name

It appears the northern Saskatchewan constituency of Churchill River has undergone a name change.

It’s now officially known as Desnethe-Missinippi-Churchill River.

Desnethe means “big river” in Dene, while Missinippi translates into “big river” in Cree.

The name change was passed in a bill introduced by former MP Rick Laliberte just before this year’s federal election.

Laliberte says too many people in Ottawa were confusing the Churchill River riding with the riding of Churchill in northern Manitoba.

As for current MP Jeremy Harrison, he says he supports the change in the constituency’s name.

The name change officially took effect about 3 weeks ago.
