The head of the North’s largest school division says recruiting trips to other provinces are still necessary despite progress in teacher retention rates.

Northern Lights School Division education director Ralph Pilz is enthused that there were only about 40 teacher vacancies last summer compared to roughly 110 four years ago.

However, despite that improvement and a larger-than-normal graduating class at NORTEP last weekend, he says a recent recruiting mission to northern B.C. was still needed.

Pilz is hopeful there will be under 40 teacher vacancies to fill this summer.

May 31st is the deadline for teachers to announce their intentions for next year.
