Today is the first day of the Assembly of First Nations’ annual special chiefs assembly in Ottawa.

Delegates spent the latter portion of the morning taking part in a protest on Parliament Hill in an effort to pressure MPs to address First Nations poverty.

The AFN plans to issue its report card today on how governments have responded to the 10-year-old Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples.

The chiefs and other delegates will also be hearing an update on the UN’s Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. That proposed measure suffered a setback last week when a UN committee voted to delay consideration of it.
