The chief of the Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation is defending the decision to use a court order to end a protest in Pelican Narrows.

A week-long sit-in at the band office in the community came to an end Saturday morning, a day after a judge issued a court order for them to leave the building.

Chief Ron Michel says after a week of being shut down, the band’s Pelican Narrows headquarters had to be re-opened.

Michel also says his decision was influenced by the protesters’ attempts to issue cheques to band members using band cheque-writers.
