The chief of the Clearwater River Dene Nation says he is still waiting for answers into the circumstances surrounding the RCMP shooting of one of his band members last September.

Roy Cheecham says since Harry Haineault was shot September 2nd, he has repeatedly asked for a report from the RCMP to hear the force’s version of events — which Cheecham wants to compare to what people have told him.

Cheecham wants a public inquiry into the deaths of First Nations people when police officers are involved.

He says it’s not meant to be a witch hunt — he just wants answers.

Cheecham says Haineault wasn’t armed the night he died, and he was running away with his back to the officers.

Cheecham also plans to join FSIN Vice-Chief Morley Watson next month when he meets Justice Minister Don Morgan to ask again for a public inquiry into the deaths of First Nations people due to police intervention.
